What is a buttweld lateral used for?

A lateral is a Y-branch fitting where the branch joins the run at 45 degrees instead of 90 degrees as in a tee. The shallower angle gives lower turbulence and pressure drop where two flows merge, so laterals are used on manifolds, headers and drainage or slurry lines where smooth combining flow matters. They are made to ASME B16.9 (MSS SP-75 for large diameters), equal or reducing.

What is the difference between a lateral and a tee?

A tee has a 90 degree branch, while a lateral has a 45 degree branch. The lateral's angle reduces flow disturbance where the branch and run streams combine, at the cost of a longer fitting. Tees are the default for most branch connections; laterals are chosen where hydraulic performance of a merging flow is important.

Overview

A lateral is a Y-branch fitting with the branch joining the run at 45° rather than 90°. The shallower angle reduces turbulence and pressure drop where two streams combine, making laterals the preferred choice on manifolds, headers and slurry or drainage lines. We produce equal and reducing laterals to ASME B16.9, and to MSS SP-75 for large-diameter pipeline work.

Every lateral is produced to the applicable material specification with full traceability, supplied with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 test certificates and, for boiler and steam service, IBR Form III-C certification.
